What Is The Political Makeup Of Delray Beach Florida

DELRAY Beach – Rachelle Lipman grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. Her parents were Democrats. Her husband was a Democrat. She remembers a young Wilmington pol named Joe Biden visiting her synagogue.

When Lipman'southward husband died two decades ago, she moved to the Kings Point retirement village west of Delray Beach, where just about all her neighbors were Democrats, and too from the Northeast. Later, she began dating a swain Kings Betoken resident who also was a Democrat.

But, she said, for most of her life, she hadn't thought about why she was a Democrat.

"When I looked it up and I saw what a Democrat is for, what a Democrat stands for, that'south all me," Lipman said. She's been active for the last dozen years in the Kings Signal Autonomous Lodge, where she's now president.

For decades, seniors-simply condos and 55-plus retirement communities in Palm Beach County, such as Kings Signal and the Century Village complexes west of West Palm Beach and west of Boca Raton, were solid Democratic voting blocs, the style the residents had been raised.

Overall, Palm Embankment County still is more Democratic than Republican. And its seniors countywide still lean Democratic.

But present, not so much. And in some by and large-retiree neighborhoods, anything but.

In 2012, of registered canton voters 66 and older, 49 percent were Democrats and 31 pct were Republicans. Eight years subsequently, it's 46 to 33.

In the iv precincts in Century Village West Palm Embankment, off Okeechobee Boulevard just east of Florida'south Turnpike, the breakdown – plus or minus a couple of points – is one-half Democrat, one-quarter Republican, and a fourth "other" or no political party.

In the precinct at Century Village Boca Raton, at Lyons and Yamato roads, the split up's 38 pct Democrat, 28 percent GOP,  and 34 percent other.

At v precincts in or around Kings Point, on Atlantic Avenue west of the city, 2 are 49 pct Democrat, two are 55 percentage and one is 57 percent.

Three upscale neighborhoods in northern Palm Beach Canton that average 66-plus don't look like that at all.

Precinct 1252, around BallenIsles Country Club, off Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens, is 79 percent 66-plus. It's 37 percent Democrat, 34 per centum Republican, and 29 percent other.

Precinct 1344, around Old Port Cove, on U.Due south. one in Northward Palm Beach, is 72 percent 66-plus. It's merely 26 percentage Democrat to 46 percentage GOP and 29 percentage other or none.

And Precinct 1138, around Jonathan's Landing, at Indiantown Road and the Intracoastal Waterway in Jupiter, is 76 percent 66-plus. In that location, it'south but xv pct Democrat, 58 percent Republican and 26 percentage other or none.

"BallenIsles is 60 percent Jewish. And solid Trump," longtime county Republican leader Sid Dinerstein, who lives in that neighborhood, told The Palm Beach Mail service.

"Very few of my neighbors spent their careers working for the government," said Dinerstein, who chaired the Republican Party of Palm Beach County from 2002 to 2012.

He said the mostly Jewish, mostly Northeast-raised seniors populating those neighborhoods "came from a different perspective" than their solid-blue counterparts in the condos. He said they're entrepreneurs who turned toward the free market and to the GOP.

'It'due south a little army'

Andre Fladell is the longtime southern Palm Beach County Autonomous political ability broker who founded many of the retiree and condo political groups. He said residents of those condos and retirement neighborhoods would "all vote in clubhouses. They vote in their own developments. Information technology'southward a piffling army. And the army produces phenomenal numbers."

These retirement villages, he said, were comprised almost exclusively of Jewish and Italian-Americans from the New York expanse and New England.

"These are liberal Democrats. These are John Kennedy Democrats," Fladell said.  "When when you trigger, emotionally, one of them, you trigger a thousand."

Simply, he said, in that location are cracks in the bloc.

"The Jewish senior population has watched, over the past six years, a deterioration in Democratic back up of Israel," Fladell said. "Trump has been extraordinarily potent for Israel."

Across that, he said, "People are abandoning parties in general. The voters are disgusted with both parties."

'They were New Dealers'

Peter Feaman, a Boynton Beach chaser and the Florida National Committeeman for the Republican National Committee, recalls moving downwards from Connecticut in 1975 and having the elections office clerk inquire why he was bothering to register as a Republican in a canton where Democrats automatically won.

Now, he said Tuesday, "For the first fourth dimension in my memory, at that place's a Republican Club in Century Village, and at that place's a Republican Club in Kings Point. That was unheard of as recently as 10 years ago."

He added, "You still have majority Democrats. Merely nowadays they're persuadable."

Palm Embankment County "still is considered to be a Democratic stronghold," Aubrey Jewett, a professor at the University of Primal Florida's School of Politics, Security and International Affairs, said Tuesday. Just, he as well, said that's irresolute.

"The condo commandos traditionally were folks who came of political historic period during FDR'due south time in office. They were New Dealers," Jewett said.

But, he said, a person who'southward turning 65 this year was a young developed, possibly with a new spouse and a child and a habitation and a budding career, when the Reagan Revolution swept the nation 40 years ago.

And, he said, the average Palm Beach County resident at or past retirement might not necessarily be someone who moved down last calendar week from Long Island. He or she just might exist someone who grew up here.

One matter seniors do with a passion is actually go out and vote.

In the 2016 election, while lxx pct of all registered voters in Palm Beach County bandage ballots, only half of registered 18-to-29-twelvemonth former did and so. Only lxxx percent of those 65 or older did.

In the 2018 vote, it was 59 per centum overall. It was 37 percent among young voters, and 74 percent amidst seniors.

And because Florida, and Palm Embankment County, have such political clout, Jewett said, don't expect either Democrats or Republicans to end fighting for every vote in the county, senior or otherwise. Feaman said a 42 percent vote for Trump in Palm Embankment County probably would put him over statewide.
